It’s where the jungle crashes into the sea most dramatically. The whole atmosphere feels a bit more spiritual, a bit more grounded (and, let's be honest, a lot more photogenic).


But Tulum isn't just about expensive boutique hotels and that one famous Instagram sculpture (though we'll get to that). At its core, Tulum is about powerful history, a mesmerizing underground river system, and the gateway to one of the most beautiful nature reserves on earth.


So, how do you experience Tulum authentically? How do you choose the right experiences from all the options? That's exactly why I put this guide together, focusing on the unique adventures that truly make Tulum, well, Tulum.


💭 Why I fell in love with Tulum:

The first time I stepped out of the bus station in Tulum, everything felt different. The people were more beautiful, the music was techno instead of reggaeton, and I immediately knew—I could live here happily. The Historic Heart – The Mayan Ruins


You can't talk about Tulum without starting here. The ruins are the icon.


1. The Tulum Ruins: The Main Event

This is the only major Mayan city built on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean. That combination of ancient history and the bright, turquoise sea is breathtaking.

  • What makes it special? The view. Full stop. It's one of the most photographed places in Mexico, and for good reason.

  • My Tip: Get a guided tour. Without one, it’s "just" beautiful stones. With a guide, the place comes alive, and you understand the meaning behind the temples and structures.

2. Combo Tours (History + Nature)

The most efficient way to experience the area is by pairing the ruins with a refreshing dip in a cenote.

  • Half-Day Ruins + Cenote Dos Ojos: This is a perfect, classic combo. You get your history fix at the ruins and then cool off at Dos Ojos, one of the most famous and beautiful cenotes in the area.

  • Ruins + Akumal Turtles + Cenote: This is the "Best of the Riviera" package. You start with history on the cliff, move on to snorkeling at Akumal Beach (famous for its sea turtles), and finish with a cenote swim.


3. Chichen Itza (A Wonder of the World)

Okay, so this isn't in Tulum, but it’s a classic day trip from the area. If you’re here and have the time, seeing one of the New Seven Wonders of the World is a powerful, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Exploring Tulum's Natural Wonders


The Underground Magic – The Cenotes


Tulum is the undisputed capital of cenotes. These are natural sinkholes or caves filled with crystal-clear freshwater. Every single one is different.


1. Casa Tortuga Cenotes

This is a charming little "cenote park" that lets you experience four different types of cenotes with one ticket: a completely open one (like a lake), two semi-open ones (partially caved), and one fully enclosed cave cenote.

2. Private Cenote Tour

For those who want the pure experience without the crowds. A private tour can take you to the hidden gems and lesser-known spots at your own pace. This is my preferred way to explore places like this.

3. Cenote Diving (For Certified Divers ONLY)

This is a whole other world. Not snorkeling—this is full-on scuba (Cavern Diving) inside the underground cave systems. Tulum is the world capital for this, and it's an experience you'll never forget.

The Wild Side – Sian Ka'an Biosphere


"Sian Ka'an" means "Where the Sky is Born" in the Mayan language. It’s a massive UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and it is truly a wild paradise.


1. Sian Ka'an & Muyil Ruins

This is the more relaxed, cultural version of the reserve. This tour combines a visit to a small, jungle-covered ruin site (Muyil) with a boat ride through stunning lagoons and a magical, lazy float down an ancient Mayan-dug canal.

2. Sian Ka'an Adventure & Fishing Village

This is the more adventurous option. You head deeper into the reserve on speedboats, searching for dolphins, sea turtles, and even crocodiles in their natural habitat. You'll also snorkel the reef and visit a remote fishing village.

The Artistic Soul of Tulum


The "Tulum Vibe" – Art & Unique Experiences


Yes, Tulum is also an aesthetic. Some experiences are just beautiful, unique, and capture the vibe of the place perfectly.


1. The Art Tour & The Famous Sculpture

If you want "the" iconic photos, this is the tour for you. It takes you to the famous giant wooden sculpture, "Ven a La Luz" (Come to the Light), the surreal "Azulik Uh May" art house, and even includes a cenote visit.

2. Private Floating Breakfast

This is the ultimate splurge, perfect for a birthday, anniversary, or just a "treat yourself" moment. You get a private spot near Cenote Dos Ojos with an elaborate, beautiful floating breakfast tray served in your own private pool.
